This Saturday, our first official group training, is a practice 5k at Orange Terrace Park. You might want to switch Thursday and Saturday (according to the training plan) and do 3 miles hard on Saturday and move the 4 mile long training to Thursday.

Saturday details: Meet at the parking lot at the corner of Deercreek and Grove Community Drive at 7am. That’s right. 7am meet time. We’ll announcements and updates at 7am, take an official 2013 “First Day” team photo at about 7:20, then do our warmups, TWV team clap, and pray. Gun time will be right at 7:30am for the practice 5k.

This week I had a former cross country runner from King HS contact me. He’s off to college but wants to do the LA 13.1 with us in January. He had some great questions. Here are my answers (share with friends who are curious):

How do I join?
It’s really easy to join. Go here and join the team: http://support.worldvision.org/site/TR/TeamWorldVision/TeamWorldVision?team_id=41570&pg=team&fr_id=1820

How do I fundraise?
When you join the team, you get set up with a personal fundraising page and you can share that link easily on Facebook or through email. You don’t have to raise a certain amount of money but they give you a target of $50 per mile you run. So for the 13.1, the target is $655. Some of our team members make that and some don’t. There’s no penalty.

What does it cost?
It’s free to register with Team World Vision; however there is a race registration fee that you pay through the LA 13.1 organization. Make sure you use the discount code TWV provides and your registration should only be $60, even when race fees go up as we get closer to the event.

What a beautiful day it was yesterday. Our marathon team consisted of:

Wes Kriesel
Daniel Lopez Jr
Arthur Mistretta
Denise Miller
Christal Pennington
Timothy Potts
Angel Rodriguez
Angela Anguiano Lujan
Patricia Rodriguez
Ashley Stacy
Pablo Nolasco
Ryan Rasmussen
Sheila Valles (2-person charity team relay)
Amanda Lopez (2-person charity team relay)

We had a few others sign up who ended up not running due to injury or not feeling prepared. 14 marathoners, up from 3 last year is pretty good. Our fundraising total for the marathon team is currently at $5833.40, which ends up being approximately 20% more raised per fundraising team member than our half-marathon team. The larger the commitment to train and go through pain, the larger the commitment to fundraise, apparently. I’m very proud of the team.

With our half-marathon team’s total of $38,423.22, together we raised $44,256.62 for clean water in Uganda.

Our times ranged from 4 hours to 7 hours. We had some amazingly dedicated walkers/joggers who went the marathon route from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica in 6.5 to 7 hours, dedicated to the cause of bringing new life and new hope to Ugandans through clean water.

As a side note, last year I jogged/walked the LA marathon only in order to meet my fundraising goal for Team World Vision (which I had missed by several hundred dollars at the half-marathon in January), finishing in a time of 5 hours and 44 minutes. A few days after last year’s LA marathon, I knew I wanted to do it again the next year. I spent the year making running a part of my routine, targeting a time of 4 hours. I finished the LA marathon yesterday in 4 hours and 2 seconds.

The idea of Team World Vision, like the national director Michael Chitwood told us at the team dinner, is an absurd one. The fact that we get to challenge ourselves to a personally fulfilling athletic goal AND reach out and raise support for the poor is an absurd idea. However, that’s exactly the way God works, isn’t it? He never leads us down paths to reach out to the oppressed, poor, less fortunate, hungry, homeless, unreached and unloved in order to bring us down or destroy us; his path to reach out to others only lifts us up and builds us up. With Team World Vision, we all train separately to a large degree but we all fundraise together. This team experience has been a great lesson in the Christian faith. We all are responsible to develop our spiritual health largely individually with devotion time, prayer, and reading the Bible but ultimately, the biggest impact we make comes from being a part of the team, a part of the body of Christ. It’s good to be plugged in at the Grove.
